label bosses are back in tandem for the sixth release on micropunto: wine ep, which also marks the beginning of micropunto schallplattens vinyl era. wine ep started as a back to back game after a spillage incident. ikkaku and d-gelo started producing two separate tracks in their respective stations and every half hour they swapped seats, building the tracks as they went along. the result is this musical experiment that sets the trend for all things to come from the micropunto clan. they spilled wine on me kicks in with a deep lead stab from the catacombs. the elements appear on the scene in a stride to resurface. it goes up then down, left, rigth, it gets dubby, then back in your face. in i spilled wine the beat unfolds steadily like a bulldozer coming up to the surface in search of the true sound. next we meet the preacher. with a subtle housy piano lead he puts us in the right track, reminding us that the dance floor is made of sand and we are on the rivers bank. listen to the flow. lord techno, you are my music. originally inspired from a dub tune featuring ras ajay from the spaceship sound crew in london,dubwine closes the triangle with a huge dub flare. fat subsonic bass and broad stabs make this track a serious contender on the dub techno charts. its the producers blink of respect to the reggae culture that has inspired them all through the years, hence the vinyl release.

i just woke and its pretty cold outside. i havent opened the window yet, but i somehow know it and im listening to these six tracks again and try to make an approximation of why and how i have done this ep. they are pretty different from each other but tell the same story or at least are part of the same one as a matter of fact. maybe they were done as an excuse for my overdue album which is scheduled again for this year or maybe just because i was going through some odd times and needed to immerse myself in doing something. in this case music. more the latter i guess. ok so, the opening track is in a way the end of an era and the last one the opening of a fresher one. and the rest fills in the gaps in between those two moments i guess. i hate conceptual things anyways. i never know or want to know why i do certain things. concepts define something before it already begins its existence and trying to explain why is pretty useless. so here it is. the recording of a certain period of time in my tiny existence. with collaborations with jaw (dop), my brother atilla, who is also responsible for the artwork, and jonny cruz. by the time its out itll be a distant memory for me but hope it lasts a bit longer for anyone that listens to it

twisted tongue follow up their acclaimed debut album with the first single from their follow-up lp, >a return to space<. eschewing the p-funk stylings of their self-titled debut, twisted tongue (dave jay & mark dalton) provide an essential revival of the mid-tempo soul stepper, featuring guest vocalist johanna lee sweetly leading a tough, incessant groove that recalls the classic likes of nick martinelli and the mizell brothers. twisting the track even further are the remixes provided by dj ray mang (dfa, mangled), one of the founders of londons nu-disco scene, who has long taken inspiration from new yorks golden era of the loft and paradise garage. twisted tongue writer/producer dave jay joined forces with ray for his >mang vs. mondo< ep on mangled earlier this year, and here mang returns the favour by dubbing out and extending >a return to space< to mind-bending effect. on the flipside is the cinematic, downtempo remix by blue states, which subtly subverts the original, transforming the track into a late night indie excursion. andy dragazis (blue states) has now been delivering his unique brand of melancholy, guitar-led head music for over decade, via labels such as xl recordings, and this mix of >a return to space< ranks up there with his most memorable work

one would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. images and visuals floating through your head as you press play, the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. as the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine japanese taiko drummers playing their part. once the break takes hold, a short span of melodic heaven uplifts before the drums take control again.

greg wilson dips into the vaults and reworks two tracks from the pre-disco era of funk & soul on his latest ruff edits release. willie hendersons the dance master (1973) and happiness is just around the bend by the main ingredient (1974) were both cult favourites with black music aficionados way way back in the day, even before greg started deejaying in the clubs first time around. greg originally extended these tracks for his vintage future retro mix earlier this year, before he began to play them out as ruffs

>mr nice< features snippets of howard marks which are interlaced with clattering breakbeats and booming sub bass. while we are sure howard would approve of a late night after party session, for many this will be the soundtrack to what happens before they leave the club! label boss steppa and his co-producer kitcha provide an excellent aa side which harks back to the classic formation records era. splicing in cheeky samples lifted from anthems of old and twisting them into something brand new, this one is just as fearsome on the dancefloor.

following on from their debut 12inch >i like triangles< on backyard records, italian beach babes are proud to announce hounds of hate second offering the 3 track 12 inch head anthem.
this london trio drop syrupy euphoria hits for the very late night. their heavy, low-tech sound evokes, in their words, >a synthetic weave stuffed in a floppy drive< or >vaseline smeared on a trax record<. hounds of hate have catalogued diverse movements from their tweens by recreating exact sounds and recording techniques from that era. the conflict is in the naivete of their candid homage opposed by their own pessimism and tendency towards irony.

sehou provides a prime piece of forward-looking nostalgia for metrolines latest release - the cirkus ep. up and coming talented producer from the south of italy, sehou was the man behind the massive track -she makes me wanna dance- released on all inn limited thats been hammered by ricardo villalobos in pretty much all of his sets for the past year. the brutal bass groove of cirkus calls to mind classic era r&s, its choppy vocals and skittering percussion give the track a raw funk, while its smooth pads add a reassuring, warm flow. untitled to her is a relentless robert armani-style workout, with a hint of chi town bubble and funk. driving chords and simple drum patterns give the tune serious momentum, while plenty of breaks in the rhythm and machine gun buildups make sure you dont lose the groove. romanian producer cristi cons aka case sensitive. after dark interpretation is a gloriously meandering, fluid rework. its subterranean bass bumps and heavily filtered synths give the track a brilliantly disorientating feel, while its tense and tight arrangement bring a tense energy.

in an era of heavy discotheque music played in dark cavernous spaces, light club offers a positive alternative with night bulbs. picture cruising down the highway in a 1985 volkswagon scirocco at 4am at a speed so fast that the passing lights blurrr into a sweeet neonesque glow. light club is that glow. almost like a ghost, a good one, not a scary one, perhaps the ghost of rick james... or nick nolte, wait, he is not dead yet. regardless >light club - night bulbs ep< is both a feeling and a moment caught on one spiffy myor 7 inch.

numan khan from manchester is a new artist for planet mu with an original musical style that mixes dubstep and grime influences with an idiosyncratic take on rhythm to great effect.
this four track ep showcases his styles from the a side with the lush melodic accordian and snes melodies of >race against time<, to the slower, disco influenced >photograph<.
the b side starts with >voodoo<, which combines grimey bass and strings with offbeat drums to odd, driving effect and finishes with >xx< which sounds like a long lost golden era 8-bit grime instrumental but with deft production tweaks and fx that keep it interesting and effective.

after a lengthy break from the electronic music world, genotype is back with an lp for exit records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias just jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as trouble on vinyl, renegade hardware and reinforced records, its no surprise that he has managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of jungle. many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. the dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for west indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

amazing doublepack vinyl introduction to new 2020 vision signings morning factory. naming yourselves after a ron trent & chez damier track is a pretty strong statement of intent and you have to have the deep house chops to match. luckily these two guys from the netherlands can walk the walk, this doublepack release harks back to the golden era of deep house. the four tracks are all linked by their deep and grooving atmospheric. from the deep slow detroit sound of >dedication<, to the hypnotic drum workout of >btraxx<, to the bolshie >bouncing moog< to the infectious lead track >lovedazin.< previously receiving on yore records these guys are only starting out, but this release is bound to put them on the map.

the self-titled debut ep from rising san francisco-based artist ooooo (pronounced oh) will see its highly anticipated release on 12inch vinyl and digital formats this september 27th via tri angle. the second release for the upstart label (following the august 16th release of balam acabs see birds), ooooo heralds a new era of shrouded pop music, approaching territories untraveled with an inimitable melodic touch.

cessas third release on their missing link sounds imprint is another typical blend of styles that evades characterization. having recieved massivee support from the likes of mary anne hobbs, laurent garnier, sbtrkt, geiom, mr scruff, and top a & r man ross allen amongst others, cessa return with their strongest release to date. >recon< sounds like a blend of the best of good looking/ promised land-era d & b with more immediate 2 step/dubstep sensibilities that produces a great mix of rolling beats and a melodic soundscape. recon was given the sbtrkt treatment on an earlier mls release and returns here in its fine original form. >down & out< opens with an eerie acoustic double bass intro that descends into an upright synth-led floor filler, while still maintaining cessas love of restless arrangements and beat programming that strays away from the usual.

this sampler, first of two, holds three tracks from the classic >spelunking< ep, which was originally released on planet e and with which he solidified his name in the scene. track a2, land of the lost dance, is an unreleased track from that era. another fine example which shows that recloose is the don of mixing funk and techno. with this compilation we celebrate reclooses early works from the late 90s, early 00s. this material is often regarded as his best. the compilation includes his best music from that period, both released and unreleased.

the third and final installment of spectral sounds document 12inch series offers four choice cuts from our era-defining, ryan elliott-curated label comp. kassem mosses remix of lawrences >divided< is a fiendishly tight slow-burner, fitting its ricky-ticky hi-hats and sharp-edged snares together like cogs in a swiss watch. the german producer twists parts around, testing various permutations, and rewards his patient listeners with a dusting of synthesized bliss at the end. heiroglyphic beings rust-flecked >got no place to go< traffics in humid ambience and smoggy gestures, evoking a post-apocalyptic dawn, distant bird calls and all. on the flip, spectral newcomer gadi mizrahis masterful >she only looks at you< hints at krautrock and tech-house while a thoughtful organ hums in the background, and kate simkos buoyant >zhivago< plays ping-pong with a bucket of electronic toms while a crowd-revving synth swell makes itself useful at just the right moment.

michigan central station built in 1913 for the michigan central railroad, was detroit, michigans passenger rail depot from its opening in 1913 until the discontinuance of amtrak service on january 6, 1988. at the time of its construction, it was the tallest rail station in the world. the building, located in the corktown district of detroit still stands today, though it remains unoccupied. restoration projects and plans have gone as far as the negotiation process, but none have come to fruition. spread throughout the city of detroit and its surrounding metropolitan area, the decay of once magnificent buildings during the industrial revolution and automobile era now cast a shadow of despair on a once flourishing city. these monuments of achievement now lay barren and forsaken by city government. infrastructural restoration and city development are fundamental elements in detroits recovery, and the recovery of cities worldwide. it is time for revival in our cities, but first, in our souls. the michigan central station ep is a platform for this change.
